Oklahoma Permitless Carry vs an SDA License: Do You Still Need a Permit?

By Cristian Barron

Since November 2019, most law abiding adults in Oklahoma can carry a handgun openly or concealed without a license. So why do so many Oklahomans still apply for a Self Defense Act (SDA) license? Here is a plain English comparison.

This article is general education, not legal advice. Laws change, so always confirm current rules with official Oklahoma sources or an attorney.

Permitless Carry in Oklahoma

Under permitless carry, adults who are at least 21 (or 18 and serving in or honorably discharged from the military) and who are not prohibited from possessing firearms can generally carry without a license. There is no class, no fee, and no application.

The rules on where you can carry still apply. Schools, courthouses, certain government buildings, and private property posted against carry are common examples of places where carry is restricted.

Why Get an SDA License Anyway?

  • Travel and reciprocity. Many states honor the Oklahoma SDA license. Permitless carry only applies inside Oklahoma, so if you drive to Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, or Kansas, a license can make a big difference.
  • Proof you qualify. A license is a simple way to show law enforcement that you have been vetted.
  • Firearm purchases. In some situations a valid license can simplify the purchase process.
  • Training. The licensing process requires a course, which is a good push to get real instruction.

Who Should Strongly Consider a License

If you travel out of state, cross state lines for work, or simply want the most options, a license is worth the effort. Shooters who carry only around Tulsa and never leave Oklahoma may decide permitless carry meets their needs.

The Part Neither Option Covers

Neither permitless carry nor a license makes you skilled. Carrying responsibly means you can draw safely, hit what you aim at, and make sound decisions under stress. That only comes from training and practice.

Our concealed carry training focuses on exactly that, and our Oklahoma concealed carry laws guide covers more of the legal basics. See the schedule for upcoming classes.
